Faces of the 47th

Inside Out People’s Global Art Project by JR

Oklahoma Project mgr Sarah Agee Project photographer Neil Chapman

Proposal: Faces of the 47th
This Oklahoma project highlights the 47th position of educational funding compared to the rest of the country. Oklahoma City install is the last of five locations, Waynoka, Paseo, Norman, Pauls Valley, and Oklahoma City.

The 47 children represent all grade levels and Oklahoma’s future. One fact, Oklahoma has one of the largest incarceration numbers in the United States.

Fund education, grow quality citizens, grow a thriving state.

RED EARTH 2019

For over 35 years Red Earth has been recognized as a major multi-cultural resource in Oklahoma, advancing the understanding and continuation of traditional and contemporary Native culture and art.

Each year in June dancers from indigenous tribes compete and demonstrate their dancing skills. The public is treated to an amazing array of beautiful dances, clothing and songs. It is a must to see if you are visiting Oklahoma in June.

My goal is to photographically preserve the flavor of a special cultural event. Here are a selected few images from a two day shoot.

Leonard Knight

It started with the desire to create and build a hot air balloon. It failed miserably but lead to the creation of painted mounds, Autos, rooms and hay stacks. 25+ years in the making and stopped at his passing away in 2014.

Yukon/Arcadia "Longhorn"

A friend called me and said I came across some longhorn steers along Route 66, you might be interested. So the next morning I drove west on Route 66 until I came into Yukon, Oklahoma. Aside from being chased by one of them I think they really didn't mind their portraits being taken.

East of this location, also on Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma there was another herd of longhorn steers. Smaller but just as beautiful and equally as curious about my presence as in Yukon.

VanZant Corral "Practice"

Every Saturday morning in Newcastle, Oklahoma a dozen friends, who have known each other over 20 years, get together to hone their skills. What are their skills? In this case it is working their "cutting horse" to separate numbered caves into respective corrals.

These are world class cutting horses and I would add world class horse riders. This photo shoot is only the beginning. This great bunch of cowboys have welcomed me back anytime . . . more images to come.

Choctaw Horses

Choctaw horses are in fact a lineage of Spanish Colonial Mustangs. Called "Choctaw" because they were Spanish mustangs bred by the Choctaw tribe. After Choctaw/Spanish war battles, the Choctaw obtained their horses and carefully bred them, hence through the years they became known as Choctaw horses.

Bryant Rickman, over forty years, has continued the practice of carefully breeding these horses to preserve the lineage. The Choctaw on this page are from several herds that Bryant has provided horses for;  Rickman, Coleman and Davis herds, as well as others.

As of 2014 this lineage became the official "Heritage Horse of Oklahoma." There is still much to do to preserve this beautiful line.

Marvin Cline "Buffalo"

While driving on a back road north of Guthrie I stumbled onto five buffalo just off the road. Further investigation I met the owner of this buffalo family.

Marvin Cline gave me approval to photograph his buffalo and suggested I come back in winter when they are out in the open pasture; suggesting that snow pictures of these animals would be "spectacular."

This is what I love about Oklahoma, "come back y'all," not the usual "get off my property."  I will return this winter's first snow.

Women On Target 2012

Women On Target during 2012, 2013, 2014 Oklahoma City Gun Club hosted this “women only” gun shoot. The purpose was to have fun, learn about gun safety and shoot just about every kind of gun alive - almost.

Watching and photographing this event was an eye opener. Participant ages ranged from 9 yrs old to 83 yrs old. With the help of Oklahoma City police, and OHP they demonstrated safety and knowledge of each gun type; hand guns, long rifle, high-power, and shot gun.

It was impressive to watch them all in action. To view 2014 and 2013 go to: chapmansplace.com/womenontarget

2014 Governor Mary Fallin joined the fun with the women shooting at the high-power venue. See the link above.
